Candid Student Reports

The following reports were written by members of Shodor Scholars Program during the third day of the program. Some elements may have been removed/edited for various reasons, but the text that remains is in the student's own words.

Michael

I'd like more clear explanations about what exactly we are supposed to be *doing*. The classes were interesting, however.

Symone

Today was more interesting than yesterday. I enjoyed the star gazing activity.

Hniang

I like the lesson for today. As u said we should work a little bit for presentation skill. All the presentations are great and I want more to learn from shodor.

Amanda, David, and Matt

We liked the GalaCrash program and learning how data was sent for astronomy. We also learned how "everything sucks". There was nothing that you could improve on for today.

Artem

i thought today was more interesting than the previous two days because of the more independent activities that we were able to do. The galaxy simulation and the program with all the different stars were very impressive.

Kate

I thought it was really fun messing around with the space programs and listening to the reports. I think its easier to learn from my pears than the speakers who come in. Overall I thought today was a very good day, though I don't know about always having to check ourselves out.

Alex

I quite enjoyed watching galaxies form and colide. But I would have prefered more challenges similar to the one in which we tried to make galaxies of different forms.

Molly

Today was AWESOME!!! First off i loved that we talked/learned about astrophysics. i also really enjoyed that we could talk about what we learned and do research. i think that we need to be able to do more research and things with partners more often.

Morgan

Today's program was more interactive between the students and the lecturer. The presentations we were asked to give was helpful in bringing a peice of our work to the day.

Nick

1: Everything we did. The software's quite good. 2: It's not rounding error - look at the Pleiadies in 3000. (3000! not even 5000!) 3: Too bad we didn't get around to the programming. Oh well.

Sammy

Today I enjoyed using programs to look at space and the interactions of heavenly bodies. Much of the stuff we talked about was new to me.

Vishal

The exposure to a new field of science (astrophysics) allowed me to develop new interests in the world of computational science. It was great having more hands on work rather than listening to presenters.

Nitin

1. The activities like the astrophysics and the starynight acttvity were both very fun. It was very informative and interesting. Presentations were fun 2. It was going a little slow at times 3. Overall, it was very interesting

Luke

My favorite part of today was using the Galcrash applet. Most of what we did was fun, though. One thing I'd like is having the window blinds open if it doesn't cause glare.

Francine

Today we looked at stars, constelations and galaxies. It was interesting to find out that my actual zodiac sign is not what I thought it was. I am still trying to figure out what I will be doing for my final project. I'm looking forward to tomorrow.
