Candid Student Reports The following reports were written by members of Shodor Scholars Program during the fourth day of the program. Some elements may have been removed/edited for various reasons, but the text that remains is in the student's own words. Symone I really enjoyed the presentation parts of the day because it got people more involved and more out of their computers. I still think theres more programming than the actual science part. Nothing much more that can change. Molly today was really cool. we were able to present information that we found. i also got to learn to program a plot. i cant wait until i get to present again. Nitin 1. Today's weather activites were very informative and interesting. the criticizing during the presentations were helpful to my skills. 2. I think some of the critisicms were too much...to much bashing on some. 3. Overall, today was fun and interactive Morgan, David, and Nick We liked Smog City and adjusting the temperature, population, etc. Also the constructive criticism. Some more scripting/programming/such would be nice. Luke I found that the presentations were actually quite fun. Having the interns in the room definatly help esp. with trying to achieve eye contact with everybody. I know this probably can't be changed in the short term, but the projector's bad immage quality was sort of impairing. Alex & Francine We liked the coding and plotting of the Greensboro Sounding. We also enjoyed the criticism that goes with presenting information we don't know much about and didn't have much time to prepare for. We would quite enjoy and prefer more challenges (other than reports would also be interesting). Artem today was mostly fun. in the morning i learned a lot about the atmosphere and computer models and after break i learned how much my speaking needed improvement. i had some problems with programming but it was fixed. Kate Today we gave presentations on meteroligy maps and animations which we found on the web. I thought doing the reports would have been much easier if our computor had worked better, but I enjoyed listtening to what other people got out of these maps. We also had fun playing with the smog detector this afternoon. I look forward to coming tomorrow. Amanda We were given opportunities to to pratice formal presentations for our final presentation next friday. I though this was very good pratice for me and the whole group. I feel prepared now. Reality hit me today! Vishal I liked the introduction into computational environmental science. I would have liked it if we were given more challenges. Hniang I like the lesson for today and I think I've learned a lot.One thing that I would like to say is that I didn't get any comment about my presentation except from Bob. I like the presentations and I think they were better than our first presentation. Sammy Learning how to plot weather data on a plotting program today was interesting for me, because it was the first time I'd done any programming at all. I also learned more about weather from looking at meteorology charts. |
