Candid Student Reports The following reports were written by members of Shodor Scholars Program during the seventh day of the program. Some elements may have been removed/edited for various reasons, but the text that remains is in the student's own words. Luke I liked working in groups, especially the call to/from Dave Joiner. However, I wish we had more powerful computers, although this can't be changed. Symone, Kate, and Nick Today was more interesting than the other days because today we started our projects. Our project is about the different antidepressants and their effects on the brain. We choose 5 different antidepressants to study the logP and the molecular structure of the drug. The 5 drugs were 2 SSRIs, 2 tricyclic and an aminoketone. We are having some difficulty with different sources giving different numbers, but are starting to understand what's going on. Molly today was a really fun day. we got to work on our reports almost all day. my group is doing neptune and its moons. it is a very interesting subject. Alex I liked working with my project mates today. It was fun working out thwat we were going to do for our project. A little more guidance on programming in netlogo would be helpful but not required. David and Morgan We liked having the freedom to do our own project. On the other hand, it was difficult for us to come up with a topic, and even more difficult was coming up with a single project to complete. Outlining the specifics of our project was difficult. Francine This morning, we learned about the effect of fragmentation on biodiversity. I thought it was interesting; I had some information about biodiversity from reading The Future of Life, by E. O. Wilson. Before lunch, we divided into groups, and started working on our presentations for Friday (Ebola Epidemiology). Vishal, Nitin, and Artem Today we were very pleased with being involved with the group interractions. There was more than enough resources and help that we were offerend such as different servers and people that are experts in different areas of science. Matt today we learned about the effects of fregmantation on biodiversity and other aspects of that area of research. this ended up being my groups area of interest and what we desided to get working on to present. the second half of the day was spent working on making a working model. Hniang I like learning about science and computer. I like working with group and it is fun. I know that everyone is going to make their own best so as we are. I know it is hard but it will be great to work on our own. thank to shodor cos shodor gave us a chance to express ourselves. Amanda I liked learning about the effect of fragmentation on biodiversity. It was interesting to learn about the diversity of species.
Sammy Today we started working on our projects, and it looks like it may be really challenging just to program our model. It should be fun, though, and I should improve in regard to computer modeling and programming. Michael I dislike the total freedom the project is giving us. I would like to be given a specific assignment and fulfill that, rather than have to come up with an idea from scratch when everyone in class has a different idea of what's going on. |
