Candid Student Reports The following (emails) were written by members of the Scientific Programming class during the second session of the program. Some elements may have been removed for various reasons, but the text that remains is in the student's own words. Today we went over some programming basics and then implemented some basic techniques. We made our own programs to solve some problems that Garrett gave us about giving change, creating visual patterns, and taking square roots. Ben Today had its interesting parts at the end of the day, when we had to do make a program that does a certain function. The assignment I chose was to make an intelligent rock, paper, scissors program that uses its knowledge on previous choices to make its own choice. It was a success. Conrad Comments: Today we learned about conditional statements and loops. We also learned about Boolean operators. Me and my partner wrote a program to determine the change for a given number of pennies using the fewest possible coins. Daniel This workshop was better because I was able to take in what the instructor was saying. There should have been more time for us to finish our programs. Roshen Today was another successful class, without the hitches of the first class. Joshua We had a lot of fun this class. We learned more about Perl: looping, and conditionals. After we learned about loops and conditionals, we got to put our skills to the test. We wrote a program that found square roots. It was fun. We can't wait until next week. Fei and Sophia Today we learned how to create different programs and how to run them properly. It was very fun and interesting to do. Jalena and Monte I also enjoyed today's lesson very much. We continue to learn lots of new information, almost at too fast a rate. Robbie Today's class very enjoyable, but the temperature in the classroom was above normal. Anyway, I liked it, and I'll see you all next Saturday. Le'Roy and Sam Today was a great, as always. I had fun and learned a lot. I wrote a whole program on how to find the Prime numbers on 1 to 100. It was hard, but figuring it out was very rewarding. Carla Today was an interesting day as we got to select projects that we wanted to do, including calculating income taxes for the various tax brackets and a rock paper scissors program towards the end of the class. Albert
