Candid Student Reports The following (emails) were written by members of the Scientific Programming class during the third session of the program. Some elements may have been removed for various reasons, but the text that remains is in the student's own words. We first learned some basic Java, then we started to apply our skills to problems such as taking a number point and displaying it on a pixel number line. At the end of class we made our own programs; mine was a basic 4 function calculator. I believe the class would have been more beneficial today if we had learned exactly why new things in Java worked, such as classes, and the difference between capital double and not capital double. Ben Today I had fun exploring the wonders of Java and how to run and program from Perl into Java. Jalena We had a pretty good lesson today. It is hard to remember what we can do in Perl and what we can do in Java. The quick references help a lot. Also, changing a Perl to Java helped a lot because I could see the differences. There should have been more time for us to create the programs. Roshen Today in class we learned about Java programming with Alton, and Dave. They were good teachers, and we did several different activities. One of them was that we turned the project we did last week in Perl into Java. We learned a lot and can't wait until next week. Sophia and Fei Today we learned about Java and by the end of the day we had to be able to port our Perl programs (from last week) to Java. This was fun, one of the best days yet. Conrad Today was pretty interesting, as we got into the first exercises of Java. There was a class discussion about drawing a line on the screen and an end of class individual group project where we chose to make a four-function highly simplistic calculator in Java. Albert I had a fun time today. Today we worked on Java. It was kinda confusing and I wished tha I had more help on what I was supposed to be doing. But over all I had a nice time Carla Today' s class was more interesting. Sam feels a lot better because of the change in the building's temperature. We learned how to convert Perl programs into Java files. Sam wants everyone to know that he had a short attention span, and he'll pay attention more next week. We had fun today, and we are looking forward to comming back next week. Le'Roy and Sam This class continues to be the most informative one I have ever taken. I learned more about programming today than I did during a week-long full-day course! Robbie
