Candid Student Reports

The following (emails) were written by members of the Modeling Your World class during the second session of the program. Some elements may have been removed for various reasons, but the text that remains is in the student's own words.

Today was simulating how stars moved inside of a Galaxy. Then we simulated
how planets are captured by planetary capture. We found out what it took
for a planet to be captured by a star or a sun. We simulated a Galaxy
colliding with another galaxy. They broke apart into clusters just like
what scientists are observing with the Hubble Space Telescope.

Today we learned about galaxies. It was very boring. But we learned a lot.
We looked up stories about galaxies from a cnn article. And we learned that
the faster planets go the less chance they have of getting caught by the
sun.

Today we spent all day working on Galaxysee 1.2.4, exploring what
happens when we change certain variables in our experiments. Our favorite
one was the experiment with the sun and the Earth and seeing how much the
sun would affect the path of the earth. We changed the different paths by
changing the velocity and mass. We had a good time and learned a lot!!
(the picture we attached is from a different experiment!)
                       Sincerely,
                                Bruce and Tim

Today in modeling your world session 2 we explord with Galaxsee
1.2.4. We went on to the internet and looked up articals that CNN and other news
stations wrote about discoveries in space with galaxies. We read the
articals and then went back to Galaxsee and made pictures that contirdicted
what the articles said.

Today we learned about how galaxies collide. We experimented with the
galaxies rotation. We also did some stuff on planets being captured in
orbit.

Today, we learned about the difference from proof and evidence. We also
learned about models and how important they are. Later in the day we
learned about how scientists use models to find out more about what they
are studying. We also learned about collisions of galaxies and black holes.

Today we made two galaxies collide. Then we made a black hole and we made
the earth capture the sun using GalaxSee. We took a break outside and the
teachers gave us Hi-C. In the morning Bob1 used visuals to explain what we
would be doing this week. The people who got here early were allowed to
surf the Internet.
