Candid Student Reports

The following (emails) were written by members of the Modeling Your world, Session B during the third day of the program. Some elements may have been removed for various reasons, but the text that remains is in the student's own words.

Today we learned about how populations
work and how the rabbits and wolves
would survive or if they would die out.
We also learned how to compare the
populations of two different countries
and see the difference. We had fun doing
the outside activity and enjoyed using
the program that was on the shodor
website.

-Giang and Dominque

Today we modeled population growth using
Stella. We learned how to balance a
population of hares and lynx. We also
compared the population of the US to the
populations of other countries. It was fun
to model the populations and also to
expirement with rabbits and wolves on the
web.

-Ken

I enjoyed everything tpoday. I prefer
to work alone because my partners seem
to hog the work. I also have to complain
about the stuffy room. I know I don't
really have a right to complain, because I
forget to take my allergy medicine, but I
feel like I can't get enough air. If possible,
I'd like to have the class in another room, or
go outside whenever possible. But I had fun
with everything today.

-Joanna

We had fun doing model on population because
we did reports on Hares and lynx.

-Edward and Tiara

We had a very fun time today building two
Stella models on populations. One of the models
on the population of Guatemala was to see how
it compared to the U.S. population. We also
played Lynx and hares outside and found out how
to graph the game on Stella. We learned how to
work on Stella more in depth.

-April and Jamie

We had a lot of fun learning about populations.
It was very interesting seeing how the food chain
changes so drastically over a short period of
time. We enjoyed building two population models
on Stella. It was cool to see how the U.S. and
Israel population compared on a graph. At the end
of the day we played a game which showed how
rabbits, wolves, and grass interacted. Today was
our favorite day so far because we got to play
foxes and rabbits on the computer and see how
long they survived.
