Estimation

These links allow students to practice estimating quantity, length and area. Students are also asked to make comparison estimates. The activities can be set as hard or easy as desired, with hints as an option. These estimation skills will prove to be useful for modeling.

Estimation Lessons
  1. Estimation
This lesson incorporates the Estimation Activities into this lesson about estimation. The lesson allows students to practice estimating quantity, length and area. Students also learn to make comparison estimates.
Related Activities: Estimator, Comparison Estimator, and More or Less Estimator
Estimation Activities
  1. Estimator
In this activity, the user estimates the length of a line, the area of a shape, or the frequency of an object from a picture. The user then enters in their estimate as a number. The difficulty can be set either easy or hard, and the precision to close, really close, or almost perfect. There is also a hint available that displays a grid on top of the picture.
  2. Comparison Estimator
This activity is similar to that of the Estimator except that two pictures are being compared. Rather than estimating a number, the user chooses whether the item on the left is greater than or less than that on the right. The difficulty can be easy or hard and the hint is also available.
  3. More or Less Estimator
This activity is also like the Estimator except that instead of entering in a number, the picture is compared to a number. The answer can be either greater than or less than the number. The difficulty can be easy or hard and the hint is also available.
  4. Estimator Four
This activity, designed for two players is similar to the game Connect Four. The goal is to have four pieces of the same color connected horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. To earn a piece, you need to answer an estimation-related question. Users can choose to estimate addition, multiplication, and percentage problems.
