Candid Student Reports The following (emails) were written by members of the Saturday Explorations Club during the first session of the program. Some elements may have been removed for various reasons, but the text that remains is in the student's own words.
Today we did explored with jumping to conclusion. We tryed to guess if the eggs we used were raw, hard boiled, hallow or had water in them. We also guessed how many paper clips were in the paper clip box. I guessed 100 and I was exactly right. I think this was very fun and suggest that some science teachers should try this out with your class. Kati
Today we observed and learned why not to jump to conclusions. We found that that office max ripped us off with paper clips and could of gotten 50 dollars if we guessed what was inside eggs. I was kept interested for the whole time and liked the experiments. We found out how to use the computers as dice. I went all the way up to 16384 and found out the average. I glad to have come and I'm going to have some fun with the tricks that I learned. Cam
Today we did couple of explorations of jumping to conclusions. We did an experiment with eggs and how we jumped to conclusions with saying it was or it was not a raw egg. 2 of the eggs were raw, 2 were hard boiled, one was filled with water and one was hollow. I was folled on the water and hollow ones because he did not let us feel the hollow one and I thought the one filled with water was raw. After this we did some jumping to conclusions with money. Like how many heads were on a quarter which was 15 and how many times USA , United States, or United States of America which was over 25. After this we guessed how many paper clips were in a paper clip box. The box said 100 but in all we counted 100, 101, 103, and 104 in different boxes. Then we did an exploration with random numbers and the average of those random numbers. We did this with a dice. Then we got on the computers I did 1037 random numbers of 1-6. Then we found the average and found how the more numbers the closer it came to 3.5 which was the average of 1,2,3,4,5, and 6. Ryan
Today we were taught how not to jump into conclusions. We took eggs and we were supposed to look at them and expeirament with them to figure out what kind of egg it was.(either hard boiled, raw or hollow)He did not tell us what choices we had.If we guessed all 6 eggs correctly we got 50 dollars.I got 2 wrong. Then we were supposed to guess how many paper clips were in a box that said 100 paper clips count. We found that their were approximately 100.Out of 4 boxes only 1 had exactly 100. I had a great time and all of the things we did were fun. Helen
