During the first half of class, Hugh taught the class about forest fires and showed the class how to safely simulate one on the computer using a program in Interactive called Fire. The purpose of this was to look at probability and chaos. In the program the students set the probability that other trees would catch on fire, then clicked the tree that starts the fire to see what would happen. The higher the probability the more likely the whole forest would catch on fire. When one of the students pointed out that this simulation does not include wind factors, Hugh took them to another program called Directable Fire. There if the wind was blowing towards the east the students could set the probability of trees catching on fire on the east higher the the trees on he west. After break, Jon came in and did and activity with Tessellations. The class really enjoyed that. Last Update: |
