Candid Student Reports

The following (emails) were written by members of the Math Explorers Club during the first session of the program. Some elements may have been removed for various reasons, but the text that remains is in the student's own words.

Today the first thing we did was we
made a model the way that the flu
would spread, and then die down.
Interestingly, the same kind of models
we made are used by professionals in
epidimiology. The model was one of the
kinds people use in MYW (modeling your world).
Later we went into goemetry, and did some cool
stuff with polaboras and hyperbolies. We were
the only people who actually made a hyperbolas.
Along with that we did a lot of cool stuff having
to do with the different dimensions (which we
referred to as Pointland, Lineland, Flatland, and
Spaceland). We made these cool "Mobius Bands",
which actually have one side and only one edge.
When we cut them in parts, it made two strips
which were interlocked, and also different sizes!

It was really fun learning. First Bob2 taught us
and then Ms. Maria taught us, then Anne. It was really
fun learning about diseases and how to do all the neat
stuff. I like geometry. It really taught me something.
And that's all.

Bob 2 taught us first this moring using the Stella 5.0.
He taught us the probababilty of getting the flu and
the recovery rate. This was easy because the program
we used had quick easy ways to calculate hard math
problems. After we had evtered in most of the
information for the flu, we click for a graph and spreadsheet.
Using a graph and spreadsheet is a more clear way to
see the recovery rate and probabilty. Then maria
talked about the 3 different dememsions. She
handed out a worksheet and we had to draw what we
thought one dememsion would look like if we were
from a different dememsion. Maria brought in a bowl
of water and some objects. We took objects and dipped
them in the water and tried to anagine how it would

Maria brought in a bowl of water and some objects.
We took objects and dipped them in the water and
tried to anagine how it would look to be in a different
dimemsion. After snack, Anne showed us a hands on
activity, that was called parabola. We took wax paper
and put a dot somewhere in the middle. Then we
took the edge of the paper and folded to the dot.
When we finished folding it looked like a have circle
but Anne called it a Hyperbola/parabola. Then maria
introduced us to Mobius Strips. A Mobius Strip is just
a strip of paper that is flipped and then Glued. You
would think that it would have two sides and
two edges but it really only has one edge and side. If
you cut it down the middle of the strip it becomes a
bigger strip with two sides and two edges. Then once
cut a seacond time the strip becomes two concected
stripes.

Today I got late to class because traffic. When we got
there they were outside talking about how germs
spread. When we got inside we did a little review on that.
Then it was Maria's turn to talk because Bob 2 was talking
before. Maria said she changed plans a little bit she
said we were going to talk about geomatry. First we did
stuff about geomatry. Then we went to have a break. We played
tag outside during the break. While we were playing tag we
had fruit punch. My favorite is orange but they didn't
have that so I took grape. After that we went inside
again. Anne did this thing with wax Paper it
was cool. Then we went on the internet it was boring

Today, we talked about different terms in chemistry.
This Includes how dieases spread from one place and
person to another. On of our teachers took us outside
for some very important research. We each had to pick
a card without knowing whats it says. The card satd
either said you are safe or ,you got it. "It" represented
the flu. Each time we picked a card, the number of
people with the flu increase. Then we went inside to
make graphs of what we did outside. The graph showed
the following; the number of people infected, which was zero,
in the begining, the number of people that recovering,
and the number of people able to get the dieases. After we put
in our data from what we did out side, thed computer
calculated out how many people would get it in the future.
of people able to get the dieases. After we put in our data from
what we did out side, thed computer calculated out how
many people would get it in the future. We later did research
on shapes and dimension. One of the teachers taught us
how to make a satillite.
