Candid Student Reports

The following (emails) were written by members of the Internet Explorers Club during the third session of the program. Some elements may have been removed for various reasons, but the text that remains is in the student's own words.

Is it true?

What we covered today were Talkd, eggs, flu epidemic, and world population. I hope we will cover a lot more stuff tomorrow.

Brenton

Today we learned how to chat (yea right). It was chaotic, but what do you think when you have 12 crazy kids all chatting online together.... As unlikely as it seems, chatting can be used for science. Scientists can get in a chat together to discuss anything, and it is much less expensive then teleconferencing and quicker tham email. Chatting is fun, usefull, easy to do, and inexpensive. All you need is a browser capable of it, a keyboard, and one or more people to chat with. Or, it's even easier to sign on to an online service such as America Online, which is practically built for chatting. So, have fun, chat alot, and I meet you in a chat room tomorrow!

Today we did something really cool. We had little cameras attached to the computer. Mostly people just made faces, but it was neat. It was slow and did not work at first, but once it was working, no one wanted to stop. Hope we do it again. We are having lots of fun , thats about all we have to say about that, so have a nice remainder of the day!

bye,

Alex and Amanda

We just did an experiment about eggs. It was fun and we learned alot.

see ya!

Today we covered Talkd. Talkd is when we can talk to other people direcly through the internet. Talkd is like talking on the phone but typing to each other. Talkd is very useful because it allows people to show data much easier and faster since you do not have to use mailing. It is a little better then e-mail (if you are talking to someone directly) since you can show important info faster and directly. If you can show the info faster and directly someone can peer review a finding easier and faster then by fax or e-mail

Today we completed a worksheet on a population model. The model was a chart with birth rates and death rates that we put in. It showed how the population increased or deacreased depending on what we typed. We had some numbers that were based on the birth and death rates for different countries. When the numbers were typed in, it would show if the population was increasing or decreasing, depending on the numbers.
