Investigation 1A:
Precipitation and Climate

Modeling of Water Flow

Discussion Questions

  • Look at the first three tests (each row). How much water is draining each test?
  • Does the water drain the same rate in each test?
  • How much water drained during the last test?
  • What do you notice about the last test?
  • It makes sense that a greater amount of water takes longer to drain, but from the measurements, you should be able to see that the lower the overall water level, the slower the water drains, even for equal amounts of water. Why do you suppose that is?
  • Is there anything else that indicates that the water comes out more slowly when there is less water?
  • What else might affect how fast the water exits?

Using your observations from this experiment, what would you say is the relationship between the amount of water in the tube and how fast the water drains from the tube?
