ASL | These directions will guide you as you work with the "Effects Of Smoking" model. |
ASL | 1) Your teacher will help you bring up the "Effects of Smoking" model on the computer Make sure that the interface page is the one showing. If it is not, click the up arrow in the upper left hand side of the screen until you are at the correct page. |
ASL | 2) Clicking on the "Directions" button explains how to use the model. When you are done reading the directions, click on the box in the upper left hand corner of the directions to close it. |
ASL | 3) Use the sliders "Age Started Smoking", "Number of Cigarettes Smoked Each Day", and "Cost For One Pack Of Cigarettes" to input desired values into the model. Note, 20 cigarettes are contained in a pack. You should use the switch below the sliders to input whether the person is male or female. For female, the switch should be up. For Male the switch should be down. To change the switch you need to click on the round part of the switch. |
ASL | 4) Next click on the "Start!" button. Periodically during the run windows will come up encouraging the you to quit or lower your smoking. You may change the "Number of Cigarettes Smoked Each Day" slider during the run. If the message box is obstructing the slider, click on the box in the upper left hand corner of the message to close it. After you have made any changes you wish to make, click on the "Resume" button to continue. |
ASL | 5) Observe how the numbers change on the counters at the bottom of the page. This will inform you what is happening. At the end you should note the values of "Years Lost" and "Money Spent". The accompanying worksheet will ask you to write these values down. |
ASL | 6) When the "Age" catches up to the "Actual Lifetime", the person dies of either cancer, emphysema, or heart disease. The "Life Expectancy" depends on the gender; females tend to live longer than males. The values for "Life Expectancy" came from http://www.bartleby.com/151/a29.html. |
ASL | 7) After you receive the message of death, you must click on the resume box one last time to finish the model. If you fail to do this, you will be unable to start a new run. |
