Bethany started today's math explorations class with a brief introduction of herself and of the class. Then she had each student introduce themselves. The students were then broken up into groups to come up with some workshop rules. After thorough discussion and a difficult voting process the class finally decided on five workshop rules. Then they discussed the meaning of math, numbers and why we use computers in math. The students then took a break. After the break the class got to serious work. Bethany taught them all about statistics. They discussed what statistics were, why they were important and how they were used in everyday life. They also learned how to display statistics and the different types of graphs you could use to display your data. After looking at the different types of graphs the class focused on one type: the histogram. The class then went to the Shodor website to get information to create their own histogram. Before they could do that though, they had to create a frequency chart to organize and plot their data. Bethany then showed them how to create a frequency chart on Microsoft Excel. After fun, excitement, statistics, and graphs the day came to a close. Last Update: |
