Today was the first day of program. Now, for starters, I am completely clueless when it comes to anything related to computers. I am good at working with programs such as Microsoft, or playing video games, if that counts. Things such as coding and hardware/software and computer language confuse me, so I tend to stay away from that. I came because I thought a program like this would benefit me, I’m trying to put myself in a position where I know about every aspect of STEM. Today, it was just like a meet & greet type of day. I had to present who I was in front of the class and we had a presentation on office ethics. I think this will be good for me.

I didn’t attend this day of program , since I took the SAT that morning. However, I came in that Monday and made up what I missed. I learned about “real thinking”... if that makes sense. I learned about substantial and necessary and other analytical terms like that. Dr. Panoff was there and he gave a cool lesson, he made me think. I also learned how to play sudoku, and to my surprise, I’m actually not too bad at it. Today was a fine day.

On this Saturday I was not able to attend because I took the PSAT. Although, once again, I came in on Monday to make up what I missed. I learned about modeling; how models can help model models. Phil gave us a short lesson about why one would want to model and how its a big part when it comes to computers. Since computers don’t exactly have a brain of their own, they only know as much as you tell it. I learned how to use Excel, which I know will definitely come in handy. I liked the thermal simulation I did, I thought it was pretty. Today I learned a lot of useful skills.

Today I learned about command lines and terminals. I learned how to access one and how to successfully use it. I also learned that through terminal, I can log in to any system through any system. I don’t know why, but that automatically made me think about hacking, which is wrong, but I made that connection. With that comes the idea of correctly saving your files, which is super important. I learned how to do so, for future use. I’m glad that today I was able to get stuff done with minimal help.

On this day I was not able to come in, since I spent the day at the Perry Initiative. Like always, I made up what I missed by coming in that Monday. Today I learned about system based modeling, specifically, how to use Vensim. Phil went over everything the class had done that Saturday, and I created a model of my own. I’m glad that I was able to successfully model sickness (including deaths and births). I think being able to model these kinds of event through different types of models is a very interesting idea. The lesson today was very cool.

Today at Shodor, I learned about agent based modeling, which is another type of modeling that includes depictions. This is more visual type of model, which is definitely up my alley. We learned how to do so with Agentsheets. We followed along with Phil’s model and we basically modeled the same type of situation as the Vensim model. I liked how mines turned out, I liked running the simulations and seeing things move. Today’s lesson was very interesting and we also got insight on the final, big presentation we’re going to. I have that to look forward to.

I didn’t come this day, but I got Mike as my partner. We decided that we’d stay in longer the next Saturday to get our project done.

So today is the day that I got the High Level Design document for the big partner project. I learned that the thing that we would have to model was seals and fish, both tagged and untagged. My partner and I decided that I would do the Agentsheets part and he would do the Vensim part. After that, we got straight to work, and to my surprise, I got a lot of it done. I had some trouble getting things to work correctly, but by the end of the day, all I had to do was run trials and graph. I liked this project, it was fun actually.

WOW! Last day of this semester already?! Well today, my partner and I finished out projects. We actually spent most of our time waiting for people to come check our work, but in the end, it was fine. I’d say the biggest struggle was getting the radio signal/scent to work correctly. I wanted it to seem realistic with the numbers, so it was a trial and error type thing. In the end, we finished and we presented in front of the whole class. I think it went well, although I didn’t really know what to say without sounding repetitive to what everyone else said. That aside, today was a good day.

Today was the first day of the Spring Semester. We learned about Javascript today. I learned about some different types of documents and how I could edit them for myself. Which is learned is something a lot of software people do, take code that has already been written, and alter it. I learned about different commands and I also learned some keyboard shortcuts, which really helped. I think that overall, today was a really good day.
