Today Jon started class by answering some of the questions that he asked
the class yesterday. After he answered all of the questions Jon began to
teach the students tessellations. He asked the class what tessellations
are and what can be tessellated. The class and Jon then began to make a
table of regular polygons and the number of sides they have. On this
graph they had to answer whether or not each polygon would tessellate and
a
student had to prove that each polygon would tessellate. The table
allowed
for the students to come up with a formula to find the angle degree.
After that the students began to work on their own tessellations. They
were each given a sheet of paper to complete their tessellation on. Jon
informed them that the square that he gave them and their tessellations
have to have the same area. The students then had to make the pattern
tessellate.
After break the students went back to working on tessellations. Jon gave the students a website to go to. At this site was a link to some polygons. The students were to tell Jon if each polygon could be tessellated. Jon went on to teach the students the way computers condense pictures and images. Students were given another website in which they would learn about Mandlebrot sets. After they looked at and discussed Mandlebrot sets they began to use a model that would allow them to model forest fires.
