The second day of class began with an introduction of a guest speaker, Mike South. He began class by giving the job description of a mathematician. He then went on to explain Fractals to the students using the Koch Snowflake Curve. Once students got an understanding of fractals they were each given a chance to create their own Fractals on graph paper. The class then had an comparative disscussion of each persons results. Next each student had a chance to have the computer create a fractal using a rule that they create. After the Break Mike began class with a discussion about Abstract Algebra, specifically symmetry.. Using 3D shapes the students were able to identify symmetry in each shape. Using a triangle Mike had created they were able to learn about different types of symetry including rotational, line, and flip symmetry. They even filled out a table listing all the symmetry of a triangle and uncovered patterns.
