On the fourth day of Math Explorations the students got the opportunity to listen to a guest speaker, Mike South. The class was started with Mike explaining what methods mathematicians must got through with their work. The steps were recognition, description and verification; this meant a mathematician must first recognize something, such as a pattern, describe it then prove their description is accurate and always true. The class then began their study of the geometric iterative function of the Koch snowflake. The students then used a new IDRF, or iterated Drawing Rule Fractal, of their own and investigated it in-depth. For the second half of the class the students investigated the symmetry of triangles. The students found exactly how many lines of symmetry a triangle has and what functions can be preformed on a triangle and it still remain a perfect image of the original. The students then saw how functions can be combined to make all the other functions over. Finally, the students saw that this can be used practically for some things, such as juggling.
