The goal of the Shodor Education Foundation Internet Explorers Club was the stimulation of understanding. By the fifth day of the IEC camp that goal was undoubtedly achieved. In the beginning of the fifth day of the IEC, students took a survey on their view of the overall performance of the camp and possible improvements. Then Anne Thissen, an intern at the Shodor Foundation, began a chat session with different scientists. The purpose of this portion of the Internet Explorers Club was to allow the students to interact with scientists around the world. Anne acted as the moderator of this chat session.
This session went on a question-and-answer basis. The IEC students would ask the scientists questions related to science, and in return the scientists would respond. "The IEC students prepared questions a week in advance for scientists that they knew about....the IEC students' questions were put in order to keep the channel flowing more smoothly," states Anne. "The (IEC) students then posted their questions..... (so) that the panel of scientists could respond."
Thus concludes the first complete session of the Shodor Education Foundation's Internet Explorers Club. Completing the day with a certificate of their achievements, the students left with an increased knowledge that was not simply confined to collaborative tools, Internet communication tools, or models. They left with a more specialized use of the Internet in general. This session of the Internet Explorers Club has come to a close, but the students' search for new knowledge is only at its beginning.
