The class began by using a computer program called STELLA. They modeled a person who was making a bungee jump. STELLA is helpful because it creates graphs of different aspects of the jump. Later in the morning, Monte showed the class how to use STELLA to make a decomposition model. The model is useful in the area of forensics because it can help determine how long a body has been dead before it was discovered. STELLA enables the model to include several factors that contribute to the decomposition, such as the location and environment in which the body was found. Upon returning from lunch, the class discussed the mock crime and investingation that will begin tomorrow. Roles were assigned regarding who would be an investigator, a defense attorney, a prosecuting attorney and so on. The students will be responsible for all aspects of the case. Cornelia then led the students in a lesson about trash archeology. In this exercise, the students were given a bag of trash and were asked to determine who the trash belonged to based on the contents. They were allowed to question staff members, but they were not assured that the staff members were truthful. Lastly the students studied code breaking. They used a program called Decode De Code to learn about codes created by a rotated alphabet and a random alphabet. They also found some challenging codes to test their code breaking skills.
