Heat Wave

Lesson Abstract: In this lesson, students will learn about thermodynamic principles such as energy conservation, and will demonstrate uses in everyday life.

Objective: Students will learn about heat transfer and some calculations using the heat transfer equation, as well as the principles behind the application to internal combustion engines and air conditioning systems.

Materials: The instructor will need:

  • Scissors
  • Tape/glue
  • Styrofoam Cups (2 for demo, and +1 or 2 per group if doing class set)
  • Thermometers (2 for demo, and 1 or 2 per group if doing a class set).
  • Samples of various materials (1 set for demo, or 1 per group if doing class set)
  • Styrofoam cup filled with cold water
  • Styrofoam cup filled with hot water prepared beforehand.
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Computers

Note: Exercise caution while working with hot water to avoid burns; handle scissors and sharp tools (thermometer tips) with care.
