Techtronics
is an after-school science enrichment program at Rogers-Herr Middle School.
In this program, students are introduced to four branches of engineering:
Electrical and Computer, Biomedical, Civil, and Mechanical. Through hands-on
projects, such as building solar photo-voltaic cell panels and biological
signal measurement systems, students learn to formulate ideas and bring
those ideas to life.
Meeting Time: Tuesdays
from 2:45pm - 4:45pm
Program Director:
Dr. Gary Ybarra, Professor
of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Duke University
Crew

Paul
Klenk, Student Director, PhD program in Mechanical Engineering,
Wilmette, IL
As a Duke undergraduate,
Paul confesses that he chose to study engineering because of his
interests in math and science but didn't realize what he was actually
getting himself into until later in his academic career. He hopes
that students in the Techtronics program can learn from his personal
realizations about engineering and understand the creativity and
excitement of engineering design at an early age. Now for his work
towards his PhD, his specialization is X-Ray optics for medical
applications. At some point, Paul hopes to work on technology based
solutions to environmental problems such as renewable energy technologies.

Kathy
Barcus, Class of 2002 Civil Engineering, Indian Harbour Beach,
FL
This will be Kathy's
third year teaching science and engineering concepts to local elementary
and middle school students as she believes that it is essential
for young people to have a strong foundation in technology and to
recognize the importance of women in this field. Kathy is working
towards a major in Architectural Engineering, a major she designed
herself. She plans to attend architecturel graduate school and begin
a career as an architect or green consultant.

Susan
Jang, Class of 2002 Mechanical Engineering, Auburn, AL
Having spent a semester
abroad in Australia, Susan geographically rounds out her engineering
education. Susan is hoping to place an emphasis on the making the
Techtronics program a fun, hands-on experience. When not hard at
work in engineering classes, Susan loves to dance, go rock climbing,
and travel. She is considering working in the industry or applying
her skills as an engineer in the field of consulting after graduation.

Lynn
Wang, Class of 2002 Biomedical Engineering, San Francisco,
CA
Lynn hopes to emphasis
the appreciation for the constant flux in innovation and the logical
thought process of engineers with the Techtronics Program. This
year, she is doing research with MRIs to image the effects of certain
diseases. Lynn has both traveled and worked abroad in London and
enjoys French, drama, student government and travelling. She hopes
to apply skills gained in engineering to business related services
after graduation.

Simon
Wong, Class of 2004, Biomedical/Electrical Engineering, Hong
Kong
Techtronics appealed
especially to Simon because of his interests in teaching as a career.
He is looking forward not only to guiding students by building upon
knowledge in science and mathematics, but also to gaining new insights
and view into engineering and teaching. In his spare time, Simon
enjoys jigsaw puzzles, modeling and tennis.
