Techtronics
students will be working on four hands-on projects this year. During the
first half of the year, we completed our Bridge Building and Robotics units.
We designed and built balsa wood bridges then came to Duke to test them.
Next, we used Lego Mindstorm kits to build and program robots. Then the
students came to Duke to tour the robotics laboratory and present their
projects to their parents. In our current unit we are building a heart monitor
to measure the electrical signals generated by our hearts. Finally, we will
be working with photovoltaic (solar) cells to produce energy rather than
using batteries or electricity. These projects are designed to take students
above and beyond the average middle school (or even high school) science
class. We are learning a lot and having a great time in the process. |
