Orthodontic Tooth Movement








You can apply your knowledge of forces that cause movement to understand orthodontic tooth movement.

Teeth undergo five (5) basic types of movements. Observe the movement as well as the amount of force required to make the movement.

Rotation 50g

       - Spinning of a tooth.



Translation 125 grams (g)

       - Bodily movement of a tooth.



Intrusion 20 g

       - Movement of a tooth into the bone.



Extrusion 60 g

       - Movement of a tooth out of bone.


Tipping 50 g

       - A complex motion of a tooth that combines rotation and translation.
