Re: (Radically) revamping the early grades curriculum
Have you seen Everyday Mathematics, researched by the University of
Chicago and developed one grade at a time. It's a k - 6 program and they
now just finishing grade 5. An awful lot of what you discussed is there
and more. I would suggests you look at grade K independent of grades 1,
2 and 3, and grade four, five and six as a group. The program spirals
and is further laced with strands. They utilize games from practice and
algorithm invention is discussed at length in the teachers manuel. You
might be very interested in this program. Let me know after you have
seen it. It was developed by one team and before completing grade K they
studied other foreirgn countries math programs in New Zealand, Japan, Russia
and about 8 or 10 other countries. After researching the program,
teachers then wrote the layout ect. Also, the principal author, Max
Bell, wrote a paper about 20 years ago ... "The Way Math Ought to Be".
I would be interested in your thoughts on the program. Dan
