We learned about making models in Microsoft Excel like the ones in Vensim. I found it to be about 1000x easier! I now prefer to do all of my modeling in Excel but sometimes I know I'm not going to be able to. Whenever I get a chance to model freely, I will choose to use Excel. The modeling we did--attempted to do, was about how medicine effects a person over a certain amount of time and how much they take during that amount of time.
