SUCCEED Apprenticeship Program Overview
Program Framework:
- 8th, 9th, 10th grade students from surrounding districts
- 2 year program, 2 cohorts per year: "beginner" and "advanced"
- Non-residential
- Onsite time requirement: 18 hrs / month during school year, 240 hrs / summer
- Current enrollment: 71 students total, diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds
- Mentorship
- Each staff mentors 6-7 students
- Meet with students one hour per month
- Communication with parents
IT Skill Development:
- Saturday instruction
- Topics include: graphics, XHTML, CSS, computational modeling, PHP, Java, database design, high level design practices, system administration
- Assignments developed and assessed by staff utilizing these skills
- Moodle as course management system
- Projects
- Individual and group
- Incorporates skills developed through classes
- Topics include: website development, web programming
- Career days
- Speakers in IT share experiences
- Speakers from Cisco, University of North Carolina, Quintiles, Research Triangle Institute, Credit Suisse, Red Hat / Fedora, SAS
- Improvement of "Soft" skills
- Written communication skills through weekly journals and email
- Presentation skills through projects
- Professionalism
- Meeting high expectations
