Computational Thinking

The Old Approach to Modeling:

  • Describe the problem in a natural language.

  • Throw away the nonessentials.
Restate the problem in precise mathematical statements.

  • Use mathematical techniques to analyze and "solve" the problem.

Problems with the Old Approach

  • Translating problems into mathematical statements takes practice.

  • The mathematical techniques are prone to human errors.

  • But techniques are easier to teach and test than problem formulation.
