Computing is Essential to Contemporary Biology

Most biological computing falls into four broad categories:

  • Computers have become essential to the collection, storage, integration and retrieval of massive quantities of biological data

  • Analyze data to find biologically meaningful patterns, patterns, and more patterns

  • Visualize data to make it easy to understand and interpret
    • The fastest growing area of computing (along with modeling below)

  • Dynamic modeling of biological systems in support of the scientific method
    • As useful tools become available across application domains, modeling has been growing MUCH faster than programming
