Most biological computing falls into four broad categories:
- Computers have become essential to the collection, storage, integration and retrieval of massive quantities of biological data
- Analyze data to find biologically meaningful patterns, patterns, and more patterns
- Visualize data to make it easy to understand and interpret
- The fastest growing area of computing (along with modeling below)
- Dynamic modeling of biological systems in support of the scientific method
- As useful tools become available across application domains, modeling has been growing MUCH faster than programming
