In this workshop, students were introduced to the basics of aerodynamics and flight physics. We started with learning about lift, drag, and the "lift/drag triangle", with comparisons to the Wright Brothers kite experiments of 1900 and 1901. Following that activity, students were introduced to NASA's "FoilSim" wind tunnel simulator. The students used this tool to design a number of wings, testing them for lift capabilities. Finally, students had a chance to learn a little about how to fly a Cessna 172 using a flight simulator. They learned about "V-speeds", instrumentation, and then set a course from RDU airport to Horace Williams Airport in Chapel Hill.
