Logo Design (Conceptual Design)
Emphasize that a logo is something relatively simple or iconic. Think of the message or idea you
are trying to visually communicate.
Things to think about when designing a logo:
-
Associations - Shapes & Symbols
-
What shapes or symbols are associated with the subject of my message?
-
Colors
-
What colors are associated with the subject of my message?
-
Text (if used)
-
How much text should I use or IS NEEDED to communicate my message?
-
What words should I use?
-
What typeface (font) should I use?
-
Orientation or layout of images
-
What ways can I organize these images, color, and text (if used) within in the space that
I am given?

NOTE to TEACHER: Put together a set of logos that are pretty easy to pick apart and analyze.
Ask the following questions allowing for participation from the kids:
-
What do you think the designer was to trying to say with this logo/poster/etc. - what is the
message?
-
Who is the target audience?
-
Remind them of what factors you have to consider when recognizing your target audience
(Age group, Gender, Nationality, Background, Area of Interest, Origin, Profession/Study...
just to name a few)
-
Do the images used represent the message & target audience well?
-
Remind them of associations - do the images used say...?
-
Do the colors used represent the message & target audience well?
-
Does the style and use of text represent the message & target audience well?
Create their Custom Logo
Have the students use Inkscape to create their own custom logo.
You can even suggest that they sketch out their ideas on paper before implementing them in
Inkscape. (Have sheets of blank paper and pens/pencils available.)
