Biology and Genetics

In forensic investigations, the most important evidence often comes from the bodies of the people involved. In these activities students will learn some of the techniques used by scientists in identifying fingerprints, blood, and human remains.

Blood Typing: Students will learn about blood types and genetic inheritance while using vinegar and water to identify fake blood samples.

Fingerprint Analysis: In this lab students will learn to collect fingerprint samples from household objects and use a graphics program to match a fingerprint sample to an ink print.

Identifying Human Remains: Students will investigate the murder of the Romanov family in 1918 by using skeletal measurements to determine the identity of buried family members.

Onion DNA Extraction: This non-Shodor resource teaches students about DNA analysis as they extract large amounts of DNA from onions.
