The following lesson involves the use of Venn Diagrams. Students have the opportunity to learn about Venn Diagrams, and how they can be used to model / illustrate every day associations in real life. Please refer to the Shape Sorter applet and to the Venn Diagram applet.
The Lesson :A great way to start the lesson is to ask students to fill out a form that describes several things about them, that can be answered with a yes or no question. This way you can compare data on the board for the students to visualize. Explain to them what you are actually modeling, which is factual information about them. Venn diagrams provide a way of representing data in a more visual form. If you have time, allow students to explore the applets online. They are a good resource, and representation of the lesson at hand.
