Bring on the Activity

Stella Time:

After reviewing the Stella model and understanding it. You the instructor, should build the model infront of the class. Walking them through each part and making sure they have a general understanding of it. The warmup is an exact physical copy of the Stella model which will aid in their understanding.

Building the Model:

As mentioned before the Stella model is already built, and is located Here! But when you rebuild it from scratch there are some more minor details to pay attetion to. At this point it is assumed you are a master of the basic in Stella. Besides building the basic outline, you will need to adjust some other minor things.

Exploring the Model:

Next you should have students themselves load the Stella model. Students should play around with the numbers and get familiar with the Stella environment. Have them change the numer of sick students and the number of healthy students. They should each time run the experiment, and look at the data on the graph. Also have them change the rate of infection to further anyalyze the model.

Changing the Numbers:

At this point in the workshop, students will have begun to explore the Healthy vs. Sick model on their own. Have students change the amount of days the experiemnt is run for, to 20 days. Have the students try to reach certain goals by changing the numbers in the model. Have them adjust the infection rate, or the starting number of sickly students / healthy students. Some goals might be: Having 50% / 75% / 90% of the people sick by the end of the 20 day period.
