Now we will make the model more complicated by including weather.
The weather in the model is highly simplified. It rains every 6 days. Each day that it rains, it rains 1/5 of the total rain for the month. It rains because a cold front moves into the area, so it is relatively cooler for the first three days after the rain and relatively warmer for the next three days. The model uses rain and temperature averages for the four months from New York City.
Rain makes more standing water in ponds, mud puddles, old tires, and other places. Hot weather dries up the standing water. Standing water creates more places for mosquitoes to lay their eggs. However, birds have more places to drink and bathe so they spread out and West Nile Virus spreads more slowly among them.
