Objective
Build a garden and use the scientific method to understand butterfly behavior.
Materials Needed for Butterflies
- A place for them to lay their eggs
- A food source for caterpillars
- Nectar source for adults
- Water
- Shelter
- Baking soda
Procedure
- Choose plants for your garden. (Make sure that you have a plant for the different life stages such as plants for the caterpillars and plants for the adults to get their nectar.
- Be sure that your plants have water, lots of sunlight, air and all the nutrients that they need. (ask you parents for the right fertilizers)
- Check on your plants every other week to make sure that everything is growing okay.
- Choose one of the research questions below as the focus of your observations. Design a method for gathering the data necessary to answer your research question.
- Which flower colors are the most attractive to butterflies?
- Which plants attract which life stages of butterflies?
- Which plants attract which butterfly species?
- Under what weather conditions are the most butterflies seen?
- What time of day are butterflies most active?
- What effects do lime and fertilzer have on plant growth?
