Mini-Fellowships in Science Fields: Linking Career Choices to Student Experiences
The year-round program will provide 45 students with opportunities and experiences that are exciting and connect what is happening in the classroom to the real world. As part of the program, science mini-fellowships are designed for middle school students as a two-week experience on a university campus engaging in classroom and laboratory science experiences. Classroom instruction is conducted by teachers who receive professional development in problem-based learning (PBL) linking the classroom activities to the laboratory experiments. Research mini-fellowships are designed for high school students to have a six-week opportunity to engage in research projects with faculty mentors at Winston-Salem State University and Wake Forest University School of Medicine. High school students also engage in problem-based learning activities linking the research experience to science courses and activities. Participating teachers receive in-depth training and practice in PBL. This professional development enables teachers to extend the success of PBL to their classroom students as well as to those students selected to participate in summer mini-fellowships.
