MESSY is an after school science enrichment program that will serve up to 420 students over three years from seven Johnston County middle schools. Each participant will have exceptional skills and interest in science, although they may not have had the opportunity to demonstrate traditional “giftedness.” Students will meet from 3:30-5:00 one day each week for the months of September through May. The goals of the program are to increase the number of students who pursue studies in the sciences, especially girls and minorities, to increase the number of students who incorporate scientific concepts into their daily lives, and to instill the principles of critical thinking and the scientific method in youth. The project has three components that enable students to “do” science—demonstrations and skills training from scientists, development of team experiments, and presentations of projects. Liaison teachers will serve as resources to students.
