Healthy START UP is a year-round comprehensive science program focusing on biological and health sciences with an emphasis on women’s health issues. Six focus areas—breast and cervical cancer, osteoporosis, substance abuse, mental health, physiology of exercise, and sexually transmitted diseases—have been identified to help define program activities. The program is designed for nearly 975 Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts (ages 12-17). These girls, located throughout a twenty-county jurisdiction, will be provided a variety of program options to nurture their interest in science and prepare them for careers in science and technology. A focal point of the project will be to help girls become computer literate. Special emphasis will be given to recruiting minority girls and those from rural or disadvantaged communities.
