The Sturgeon City Student Science Series will impact approximately 1,170 students by providing a summer science institute for rising ninth graders, a school year Saturday program (Science Explorers) for seventh and eighth graders, and an opportunity to clean up Wilson Bay. The goal of Sturgeon City is to convert an old wastewater treatment plant into an environmental education center and site to reintroduce sturgeon and other shellfish to the Wilson Bay, as well as restore water quality in the Bay where once the plant had discharged. These efforts have supported a series of student activities designed to improve civic responsibility, environmental awareness and community pride. Hundreds have helped in the clean up activities and the science of the water quality restoration has been the center of the Wilson Bay Keepers, a program to link science to volunteerism. The research and science at the site also fuels the other programs. During the Institute and Science Explorers, students will select a research project, learn quality tools to inquiry-based exploration and present their results to peers, community members, and researchers.
