Twelve Wake County sixth-grade students are chosen each year for this intensive program. They meet at the Museum and in the field to learn about and participate in scientific research on water quality in the Neuse River Basin. Museum staff and female scientists help the students implement a research project in which the girls collect and identify stream organisms and analyze water quality data. Participants explore the Neuse River Basin, participate in field trips and overnight experiences, learn about maps, maintain a journal, and use distance learning technology to share their stream research project with other students across the state.
Selection: nomination by school science teachers; approved by the Museum's Girls in Science Specialist; based on nominee's interest and demonstrated ability in science.
