In order to apply to the Summer Institute, each of the following steps must be completed:
Step 1 - Decisions. Decide that you wish to attend the Institute. This is not a school: there is no homework nor are there any tests. However, you are expected to do things that a good student does: observe, analyze, calculate, write, participate, work, and have fun. Students are also expected to attend the Institute on a regualr basis according to the schedule.
Step 2 - Parent or Guardian approval. Show your parent or guardian this website and ask him or her to send a copy of your latest report card to the Summer Institute.
Step 3 - Application. Fill out the application and mail it to:
The Summer Institute
3601 Ridge Road
Durham, NC 27705-5599
The completed application should be mailed on or before April 1, 2001 or brought to the Open House.
Step 4 - Recommendations. You need to have an evaluation form from both your math and science teacher(s) who have taught you this year or are currently teaching you this year. The forms are available online or by calling Howard Lineberger at 489 - 6569 ext 444. Take them to your teachers and ask them to send the form upon completion to the Summer Institute no later than April 1st.
Step 5 - Open House. Visit the Institute's Open House at 10:00 AM on Saturday, March 24th at Durham Academy's Upper School, 3601 Ridge Road. Applicants and their parents or guardians are strongly encouraged to attend, but attendance is not an admission requirement. At that time, students may turn on their completed applications, inspect the educational facilities, and meet with and talk to present students and teachers.
Selection. Once the applications are completed, including records, recommendations, and copies of report cards, successful applicants will be selected. All applicants will be notified of the selection committee's decision by MAY 1.
