Shadow Hands is a year-round science and career enrichment program targeting minority middle school students who are considered “diamonds in the rough”—having unrealized potential. The goal is to increase the number of minority, health science practitioners in North Carolina. The program includes two summer intensive learning experiences (utilizing University of North Carolina-Charlotte to provide Problem-Based Learning in health related sciences); a series of 12 innovative educational experiences on Saturdays (including “Mad Science” activities, creation of an internet-based library on health careers information, simulations of a health clinic and tours, lectures, and demonstrations from area scientists) and presentations to 300 middle school students on the value of health careers and the need for solid preparation and skills in science. The program fills missing links in services that stimulate interest and support for mostly first generation college students to succeed in gaining access to higher learning. |
