The Center of Excellence for Research, Teaching and Learning offers effective professional development for teachers and enrichment activities for students. The summer research program for high school students is designed to increase interest in mathematics and science research. The program provides hands-on research experience with distinguished faculty from Winston-Salem State University and the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Students are mentored through the five-week experience by a matched faculty based on mutual interest between the student and the faculty research. Students are facilitated through the production of a scientific paper by their mentor and then present their topic at a Student Research Symposium Day culminating the summer experience.

A series of professional and resource development programs in problem-based learning are also offered. The programs are aimed at meeting the individual needs of classroom teachers and in assisting them in integrating the National Science Education Standards and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards with a problem-based learning curriculum.
