The ASU
Burroughs Wellcome Women in Science Project is a very successful program in which 48
selected young women in grades 6-8, are taught various science skills through fun,
hands-on activities. The idea behind the program is to make science fun for
middle-school aged girls, using active learning. The students are split into teams of
two students, and are provided with a female teacher. They are given the opportunity
to use telecommunications and various materials for research. So far, the program
has been a success, the girls who participate leave feeling confident in their
abilities, and most say they will go on to careers in the various fields of science.
