Project TitleScalable CyberGIS Analytics
SummaryThe student will work with Prof. Shaowen Wang @ the CyberGIS Center for Advanced Digital and Spatial Studies (CyberGIS Center) and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) to experiment multiple cyberGIS analytics codes for achieving optimal scalability on Blue Waters. These codes have been used on NSF XSEDE resources for solving challenging emergency management problems (e.g. flood mapping) with significant societal impacts.
Job DescriptionCyberGIS – geographic information science and systems (GIS) based on advanced cyberinfrastructure (CI) – has emerged as a new-generation GIS with broad and significant societal impacts. It emphasizes integration of advanced CI, GIS, and spatial analysis and modeling capabilities to enable computing- and data-intensive research and education across a broad range of fields. Scaling cyberGIS analytics to efficiently harness various high-performance computing resources is critical for cyberGIS to handle geospatial big data collected from numerous sources and to support computationally intensive spatial analyses for better understanding the geospatial complexity of coupled natural, human and social systems at unprecedented scales.

CyberGIS-TauDEM, an data-intensive application for hydrological analysis of large terrain data, has gone through a multi-institutional collaborative effort and leveraged expertise in multiple fields (i.e., hydrology, computational science, geographic information science, and geography) for analyzing large digital elevation model (DEM) data on XSEDE. The core algorithms are both compute- and data-intensive. Several input/output (IO) bottlenecks need to be resolved for scaling to Blue Waters. The application has been used for flood mapping and production of high quality national-level datasets by the US Geological Survey. Therefore, potential impact would be huge if the application can reap computational performance benefits of Blue Waters.
