a real number that cannot be written as a ratio or quotient of two integers.

Thousands of years ago while sailing, Hippasus was the first to prove that the square root of 2 is an irrational number. His fellow mathematicians were so upset when they learned that there was a number that couldn't be written as a ratio that they threw Hippasus into the sea.
