Algorithms for Multiplication and Division

Section 3.4

Activity Name Activity Description
Shape Explorer The applet creates an irregular shape on a grid. Students determine area and perimeter of the given shape and check their answers with input to the applet. Discussion should focus on the concept of rectangular area as a geometric interpretation of multiplication.
Area Explorer Students are shown shapes on a grid after setting the perimeter and asked to calculate areas of the shapes. Discussion should focus on grouping both colored and blank rows and columns to illustrate a variety of possible algorithms for determining the area.
Triangle Explorer The applet creates a right triangle on a grid. Students determine area of the triangle and check their answers with input to the applet. The applet also supplies a 'hint' function that outlines a rectangle containing the original triangle. Discussion should focus on the concept of rectangular area as a geometric interpretation of multiplication and the analog between division of area and real number division.
