Overview of the Grades 5-8 Mathematics Program
The mathematics program at the intermediate levels strives to expand students' conceptual
understanding of a broad range of mathematical topics. The program will:
- Emphasize experimentation within the context of familiar problem solving situations,
- Provide opportunities for the development of logical and spatial reasoning,
- Emphasize problem solving,
- Encourage higher order thinking by requiring students to explain, summarize, analyze,
design and evaluate mathematical ideas in writing and discussion,
- Encourage active learning and the participation of all students,
- Utilize calculators and computers to focus on concept formation, and
- Promote a deeper understanding of a broad range of mathematical topics.
